What You Will Learn

Week 1: Yes and...

The first step in any improvisers journey is embrace the cult like community of “Yes, and…”

It’s not just a tool to generate things to say, it’s an approach to the world and philosophy on how to engage people around you.

SRE’S particular brand on this improv fundamental is called, “Yes and more on that.” Student will participate in exercise designed to orient their thinking towards their scene partner. This improv fundamental, though seemingly simple, can prove to be challenging for the uninitiated.

Week 2: Building the world

Picture this:

You step out on stage, under bright lights.

You stand in front of a large audience, next to you, your scene partner.

Not you nor the audience nor your improv compadre know what the F@#k is going to happen next.

Using the principles of “Yes and more on that,” students will play improv games that focus on matching energies, tacit communication and mime techniques to construct an improvised space out of thin air.

Week 3: GAME!

The funny, the weird, the repeatable.

Game is an improv scenes engine that two performers silently agree to dousing with premium gasoline.

The game is the fairy dust that makes an improv scene feel planned even though we know it couldn’t have been. Game is why we keep watching.

Week 4: Exploring

The play book. These are the actionable methods which equip an improviser with the bushwhacking machete required to cut through the entangled chaos of an improvised scene.

Becoming omnipotent gods of the stage that manipulate the world they’ve created, squeezing and stretching it like play dough in the tiny hands of a toddler. Using scene editing techniques students learn how to raise the stakes, explore inevitable potentiality and catapult a scene to its maximum height.

Week 5: Live Improv

Walking on a stage, holding a large audiences’ attention. Setting expectation, pushing the envelope and ending on a high note.

Using 20th century acting techniques, modern tech-driven engagement and the classical principles of ancient theater, student will learn Steam Room Etiquettes’ proven techniques to leave a lasting impression on anyone.
